XII Festival of Speed (26 July 2004)

Why?

The prettiest early-seventies driver/car combination by far being re-united once more at Goodwood. It’s not the first time that Fittipaldi was rejoined with 72-R5 but each time it’s a sight straight from the time machine. Emmo even went throught the trouble of wearing a matching period helmet. The dark Saturday weather at the 2004 Festival of Speed created an eerie resemblance to the early-Spring Race of Champions and International Trophy outings for Emerson and 72D…
From history’s youngest F1 World Champion to veteran Indy 500 winner and Indycar champion — Emerson Fittipaldi has seen it all. Rarely has a career seen two such drastic moves from zero to hero as those that the Brazilian managed to achieve between the late sixties and the mid-nineties. His first came between 1969 and 1970 and saw him grow from total South American obscurity to Grand Prix-winning driver in less than two years. The second happened between 1983 and 1985 and led him from a celebrity IMSA appearance at Miami to being a Indycar race winner at Michigan in the space of just over a year. This could only have happened because of a rock-solid foundation of pure natural ability. Yet he is perceived as a driver who relied more on his cunning than his speed.

Picture the spring of 1969. That hippiest of summers was still to come, Jackie Stewart had set his first steps towards his first world title and no-one in the world except for a few Paulistas had heard of the man that would go on to dethrone that same F1 superstar a mere three years later. In those days it was an exception skipping steps of a clear-cut ladder to F1. Emerson Fittipaldi didn’t either, F2 following F3 and F Ford on his arrival to Britain, but it was the speed of progress that would astonish many.

The interim period

Emerson had always been seen as the most intellectually gifted and mentally stable of the entire crop of early-seventies racing drivers. Here was a calculating man, sound of body and spirit, letting his soul speak in a mind-numbing move that would classify Jacques Villeneuve’s decision to go with BAR as entirely sane and ultimately logical. At least BAR had the wealth of BAT’s tobacco money and Honda’s engineering clout. Wilson’s tiny outfit had been languishing at the back of the field for one proven year now, with no significant technical changes due for 1976.

Or, as was often suggested in Villeneuve’s case too, was it simply greed? It is a fact that sugar company Copersucar forked out a monumental salary to lure the champion to their stable, money that would have been wiser to invest in a better car. The only occasion that allowed Emerson to laugh was after Brazilian qualifying in which he had just put Richard Divila’s new FD04 5th on the grid. After that the team was no more than a solid midfielder, having deserted their second car for the best part of the season and Fittipaldi not scoring any better than 6th on three occasions. So was the Interlagos performance a fluke that was totally due to Emerson’s track knowledge and the other teams not being quite ready?

At first, with Wilson driving FD01/02/03 in its first year, there was still something distinctively Brazilian about the Copersucar team. Apart from applying a national sugar-funded livery to their cars, the team worked closely with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer to at least try to make it into the national effort which Emerson would point to in defense of his controversial transfer. But soon the team moved to Reading and Divila’s turned the FD04 into even more of a Cosworth/Hewland kit-car. Although there were sparks of hope – especially when Giacomo Caliri’s Fly Studio turned the M23-lookalike F5 car into the regular points-scoring wing car F5A for 1978 – a brilliant second place for Emerson at his 1978 home race was to be the team’s best-ever result. But they were sparks that fizzled out pretty quickly. The last three years of the team’s existence – with Emerson having retired to take on management duties – were getting more embarrassing by the season, and by 1982 its cars were uninspiring tail-enders before it decided to fold at the end of the season. The Fittipaldi F1 team had danced a samba that never got into a rhythm and went out of tune long before reaching its coda.

Early and personal life

Emerson Fittipaldi was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He is the younger son of prominent Italian-Brazilian motorsports journalist and radio commentator Wilson Fittipaldi Sr and his wife Józefa «Juzy» Wojciechowska, an immigrant from Saint Petersburg, Russia and of Polish and Russian descent. His grandfather Ivan Wojciechowski was an officer in the Tsarist army. He was named after American author and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Both his parents had raced production cars shortly after the Second World War and Wilson Sr was also responsible for the first Mil Milhas race in 1956, in São Paulo, having been inspired by the 1949 Italian Mille Miglia. Emerson became a motorsports enthusiast at an early age.

Fittipaldi is the younger brother of former Formula One driver and team owner Wilson Fittipaldi. He is the uncle of TUDOR United Sports Car Championship driver Christian Fittipaldi. He was married to Maria Helena from 1970 to 1982. They had three children together, Juliana, Jayson and Tatiana. He was married a second time, to Teresa, in the mid-1980s. They have one daughter, Joana, and a son, Luca. In early December 2012 he married economist Rossana Fanucchi in São Paulo after a partnership of eleven years. They have a son, Emerson, born in 2007, and daughter Vittoria, born in early 2012

In his youth in Brazil, Emerson was known as ‘Rato’ — mouse, which contrasts with ‘Tigrão’ — big tiger — for his brother. By the end of his career he was most commonly known as ‘Emmo’ in the United States and the UK. In September 1997, while recovering from injuries in a crash at Michigan International Speedway a year earlier, Fittipaldi was flying his private plane across his orange tree farm in the state of São Paulo. The plane lost power and plunged 300 feet (91 m) to the ground, leaving hiim with serious back injuries. After recovering he became a born-again Christian.

He was a friend of Beatles guitarist George Harrison and was with him shortly before Harrison died in November 2001.

Formula 1 World Drivers Championship 1974

After Jackie Stewart’s retirement, Formula 1 became much more competitive in 1974, with four teams vying for wins, and a total of seven different drivers topping the podium. Lotus’s new Lotus 76 was a flop, but a quick return to the Lotus 72E allowed Ronnie Peterson to win three races. His former teammate Emerson Fittipaldi had moved to McLaren, where the McLaren M23 was highly competitive, the Brazilian winning three races and veteran teammate Denny Hulme a fourth. Ken Tyrrell recruited Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler to replace Stewart and Francois Cevert, and produced a new Tyrrell 007 following the template of the Lotus 72 and McLaren M23. Scheckter won two Grands Prix. The Ferrari team also returned to form with ex-BRM drivers Clay Regazzoni and Niki Lauda, and Mauro Forgieri’s hugely improved Ferrari 312B3/74. Gordon Murray’s Brabham BT44 was the other leading car of the season, Carlos Reutemann winning three races.

Behind these four teams, James Hunt had a very strong season in the new Hesketh 308, leaving BRM, Surtees, Shadow, March, Williams and Embassy-Lola as distinctly midfield runners.

When the European season started at the Spanish GP, three new teams appeared: Trojan Racing had built their own car; Chris Amon had done the same; and Bretscher Racing had a customer Brabham, bringing the regular entrants up to 29. John Nicholson’s Lyncar was also running, but was yet to attend a GP. This finally gave F1 more cars than were needed, and there were two failures to qualify in Spain, for the first time since the 1972 Italian GP, and only the fourth time since Monaco in 1971. With more teams taking spare cars to races, there were 40 cars present in Spain, beating the record of 37 set in France in 1972. The new Token team then joined in at the Belgian GP, as did Leo Kinnunen with a privately run Surtees, and Brabham joined McLaren and BRM in running a third car, so the numbers rose to 41 at Monaco, 42 in France, and then a massive 50 at the British GP, when the hopeless Maki joined the circus. Many of these smaller teams had no hope of success, and some should really have been sent home. Later in the season, Penske and Parnelli joined F1, with highly professional operations.

Emerson Fittipaldi (born December 12, 1946) is a semi-retired Brazilian automobile racing driver who won both the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 twice each and the CART championship once.

Moving up from Formula Two, Fittipaldi made his race debut for Team Lotus as a third driver at the 1970 British Grand Prix. After Jochen Rindt was killed at the 1970 Italian Grand Prix, the Brazilian became Lotus’ lead driver in only his fifth Grand Prix. He enjoyed considerable success with Lotus, winning the World Drivers’ Championship in 1972 at the age of 25, a youngest F1 world champion record that he held for 33 years. He later moved to McLaren for 1974, winning the title once again. He surprised the paddock by moving to his brother’s Fittipaldi Automotive team prior to the 1976 season, being replaced by James Hunt. Success eluded him during his final years in Formula One, with the Fittipaldi cars not competitive enough to fight for victories. Fittipaldi took two more podium finishes, before retiring in 1980.

Following his Formula One career, Fittipaldi moved to the American CART series, achieving successful results, including the 1989 CART title and two wins at the Indianapolis 500 (in 1989 and 1993, the final at an unprecedented 47 years old).

Since his retirement from Indy Car racing in 1996, Fittipaldi races only occasionally. At age 67, he entered the 2014 6 Hours of São Paulo.

Emerson Fittipaldi

Born in Brazil in 1946, Fittipalid became the youngest Fomrula One world champion in history, when he won the 1972 championship, driving a Lotus 72-Ford in the black-and-gold colors of the John Player Special team. Fittipaldi moved to the Marlboro McLaren team in 1974, winning his second world championship in the McLaren M23-Ford, three points ahead of Ferrari’s Clay Regazzoni.  Fittipaldi spent the next five seasons with the Fittipaldi Automotive team, formed by his brother, retiring from Formula One racing after the 1980 season.

After focusing on his business ventures for four years, Emerson Fittipaldi returned to racing in 1984, joining the Indy Car circuit in the United States (then called “Champ Cars”).  Fittipaldi became a full-time Indy Car participant in 1985, and in 1989 he won both the Indianapolis 500 and the series title.  Fittipaldi’s win in the 1989 Indianapolis 500 was especially dramatic, with his Patrick Racing Penske PC18-Chevrolet battling the Lola of Al Unser Jr. through the final laps.  In 1993, Fittipaldi won the Indianapolis 500 for a second time, making him the only racer to be a two-time Formula One champion and a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion.

Emerson Fittipaldi’s Heuers

We see photographs of Emerson Fittipaldi wearing two different Autavias.  Shown below is a two-register Autavia, in a traditional round case, with a compressor back (Reference 7763C).

We see later photos of Fittipaldi wearing an automatic Autavia in a C-shape case, most likely either the Reference 1163 or the Reference 11630.

Heuer’s Fittipaldi Titanium Quartz Chronograph

In 1983, Heuer introduced a series of watches in titanium cases.  Heuer catalogs and literature referred to the futuristic nature of titanium, with imagery of the Space Shuttle, with the Titanium Collection described as Heuer’s new line of watches for the future.  The Collection included men’s and women’s watches, powered by quartz or automatic movements, with inlays of either yellow gold or carbon fiber.  Dials were anthracite in color, under reflection-free sapphire crystals.

There were two chronographs in the Titanium Collection, the Reference 223.206, with carbon fiber accents, and the 225.206, with gold accents.  For 1985, Heuer produced a special “Fittipaldi” edition of the Reference 223.206, with the carbon fiber evoking the materials then used in modern race cars.

The watches in the Titanium Collection were among the most expensive in the Heuer catalogs, with the Reference 225.206 chronograph selling for $1,800 and the Reference 223.206 chronograph selling for $1,525.  These watches were offered in the period after Heuer had been sold by the family, but before it was acquired by TAG, so these are some of the last models to carry the “Heuer” name, as “TAG” would soon be added.

It is unclear why Heuer would have offered a “Fittipaldi” model in 1985.  Emerson Fittipaldi was a popular driver both Eurpoe and the Americas, and his move to join the Indy Car circuit on a full-time basis did attract media attention in the United States.  Fittipaldi did pursue a wide range of business interests after his retirement from Formula One racing, including Fittipaldi wheels, so perhaps the production of this chronograph was part of an affiliation with TAG Heuer.
